Is it my fault that Charlie is exactly the same size and weight as the fresh turkey I haven’t picked up yet? How else was I to see if our roasting pan was large enough? Our 1940s oven is very small but at least I didn’t go so far as to slide our son into it for a real test! Besides, in a true experiment I would have trussed his legs. Charlie enjoyed hanging out in the roaster but he has mixed feelings about the holiday. “What exactly are you celebrating,” he asked me as I scattered shallots on his head, “some mythical love-fest between the Pilgrims and Native Americans?” He had a point. “Hell,” he said as I spooned melted butter into the pan, “it wasn’t even made a federal holiday until 1941! And then Roosevelt only moved the celebration up to get in another shopping week before Christmas.” True, Charlie. But it's always a good idea to stop and give thanks. And you know what I'm grateful for this year.
And now please excuse me while I pick the sage out of my son's hair.
Happy Thanksgiving, Danny!
I know what all of you are giving thanks for this year and for years and years to come.
Amitiés,

I like the way he's looking at you as if to say "you're nuts, Dad, and I'm totally paying you back for this one day." :-)
He continues to make me smile.

I totally would have stuck him in the oven to check. This is why I win so many parenting awards.

Happy days ahead! Hugs and smiles to all your dear family.
Oy ... and now take that beautiful child out of the pan immediately ... (spoken with a tight-lipped Brrrritish accent of course)

Cute photo. Have a great Thanksgiving!

Me thinks my Danny has been imbibing early with the Thanksgiving wine. As the official Fake Grandma of Charlie and his cousins, I demand immediate withdrawal of the child from the pan.
Don't make me come to L.A. to chastise you further. (Wait, I was just there...)
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your wonderful children.

He looks delicious.
We're all thankful you've kept us "posted," and we're thankful Charlie will be spending Thanksgiving with you, Kendall and Leah at home this year, and for years to come.

As my mom would say, "He is DARLING! What a CHARACTER!" I love his cheeks, little cherry mouth, the owl p.j.'s, the green milk glass salt and pepper shakers, and the presence of TJ's shallots promising a delicious feast. Your posts always remind me how thankful I am for my own family, now matter how precarious it feels to love them so much, and for that I am thankful.

He and that owl outfit he's wearing have to be the cutest darn things I've seen all day. Maybe month, or years! Happy Thanksgiving to you, too!

That is the cutest picture of all of 2009. If I were you, I'd enter that picture into some baby contest, you'd probably win some money.

Hi Danny,
Have you thought about submitting that picture to either Gourmet or Bon Appetit? I think they would love it for their next Thanksgiving issue! Charlie is the best looking "turkey" I've seen in a long time.
Love,
Bubbie Marilyn
