Just a quick hello from the fun but grueling NCHE conference. I love being around history educators and so far I haven’t had to tackle anyone trying to steal Heinemann books from our booth! Above you can see my friend and history maven Christina Cocek Anderson standing with the Father of Our Country and on the right two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author David McCullough in the Heinemann booth.
I have a great impression of Pittsburgh so far. Downtown seems to be in transition with many gorgeous old buildings being restored—but not so much that they start looking like a set at Disneyland. I love that they’ve left the 100-year-old fading painted signs on most of the buildings. The influence of the Heinz family on the restoration and the city in general is quite pronounced. Of course that made me think of our would-be First Lady, Teresa Heinz Kerry. (Trivia question: Is Teresa the only person who ever married two senators of different parties?)
Tomorrow morning the exhibit hall opens at 7:00 am (gulp!) but I will try to write more in the evening from this fascinating city, home not only to Heinz Ketchup but also the birthplace of Clark Bars, Eskimo Pies, Klondike Bars, Fried Ice Cream, Chipped Chopped Ham, and Fried Zucchini (why doesn’t everyone here weigh 400 lbs?).
Ooh I love the look of that Heinemann booth! I wish I was there.
