Hooray, today begins the countdown to the end of George W. Bush’s political career! Never again will he be facing a complete term of office, and with every day that passes, he is that much closer to oblivion. I vigorously tried to ignore the inauguration yesterday but I forced myself to listen to a few pearls from his inaugural address on the radio this morning. Can I please ask just one tiny little question? Whatever happened to the Separation of Church and State? I’ve heard Papal addresses from the Vatican that were less cloaked in references to the Almighty. And while it’s obvious that Bush has teams of writers crafting every word he utters, I’ll bet they were all crestfallen to hear their twaddle so mangled by this doofus. I’m sure a line like “Self-government relies, in the end, on the governing of the self” seemed fine on the page, but Bush’s reading made me long for the oratory skills of Dan Quayle.
I just don’t understand when we abandoned any notion that the United States was not a Christian nation. Will Americans soon be required by law to pledge their loyalty to our Heavenly Father? It sounds like that’s where we’re headed.
From the day of our Founding, we have proclaimed that every man and woman on this earth has rights, and dignity, and matchless value, because they bear the image of the Maker of Heaven and earth.
Oh really, is THAT why we have rights, because we are made in the image of our Maker? Thanks for clarifying that, George. When do we start building the concentration camps for our nation’s atheists and agnostics? Or should we just send them to Guantanamo to live out their lives with the rest of the indefinitely held prisoners there?
The line I heard that almost made me veer off the road and start choking on my latte was
The leaders of governments with long habits of control need to know: To serve your people you must learn to trust them.
Um…Physician Heal Thyself?
I only hope the God Bush keeps invoking will help to protect the environment, our schools, and the countless people around the world who will lose their lives during the next four years because of our government’s policies.
Okay, I admit that I’m in a ranting mood. My dad had surgery on Tuesday and is getting out of the hospital today. The surgery went okay but one thing almost killed him this week—HOSPITAL FOOD!
I will never understand why hospitals serve the worst imaginable slop to their patients when their alleged mission is to heal. My father said that he’d have been better off in Cook County Jail. Plus, he’s a diabetic and the first meal they brought him after surgery was pure sugar including packaged chocolate pudding and Jello. Yuck! It really is a travesty and a cause I'd like to work on. Of course I won't look for any help from our Fuhrer. Wasn’t it his daddy who declared that ketchup was a vegetable? (Or was that Reagan? I think it was Bush the First who used his pulpit to decry the evils of broccoli.)
And now they’re even putting McDonald’s and other bilious fast food chains IN hospitals! See this recent article on the topic called “Should hospitals serve fast food?” with the amusingly understated subtitle, “Leading heart clinic says it sends the wrong message.” Oy. Call me crazy, but shouldn’t hospitals be the place where people receive the most nourishing, healthful meals possible?
Amen brother.

During the week following the election Garrison Keelor said something like "I think we should take away the right of evangelical Christians to vote in America, as they are citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven." I wish.
I also hope that the Bush administration has pulled a George Wallace of sorts and spews rhetoric to get votes but has little intention of acting on the rhetoric.
Optomistic much?
