What a great story...And, no. I had never heard of her before. Another reason why I love your blog.

Sounds like a good book project for you, Danny. Perhaps for your retirement years?

No, don't wait for retirement! I would so buy a book about peripheral Hollywood and all the old intrigues, scandals, and glamor stories. The Hollywood press was bought and sold back then, so a lot of these stories remain untold.

Geez Danny, you'd have your book 1/3 written just by using your blog posts!

Great story. In my limited experience researching fascinating talented women,I've found that often they were considered difficult, and the people who remember them don't want to think about them, much less share info about them. For those of us who didn't know them, this seems a damn shame, because their lives and their work are worth remembering, even if they were personally a pain in the pupik.

So, keep up the good work.

I'd actually known an abbreviated version of the Natalie Kalmus story for many years. Thank you for fleshing it out. Incidentally, you are being portrayed in another movie on TCM this weekend. "It Happened in Brooklyn", starring Frank Sinatra as Danny Miller will be on Sunday night. Why are you only in musicals?

Oh my God, thanks for the tip, Debbie, I don't know how that Frank Sinatra as Danny Miller film escaped by attention all these years! I will have to watch it and see if Kathryn Grayson uses his full moniker. This is the most fun part of having such a common name. I can now add Frank to the list of movie Danny Millers which includes Albert Brooks, Larry Parks, and Sally Field!

How is it possible this story hasn't been made into a movie? Get working on that screenplay!

And don't leave out the part where she calls Herbert "a stinker". Classic.

I love some classic movies like Gone with the wind. This is superb Romantic, emotional movie.
Natalie Kalmus is awesome. Thanks for sharing.
